Lot Footnotes
Note: Asafo flags are the flags of military companies in Fante villages, which adapted European regalia to local use. These companies defended the village against invasions from local enemies, and although the active fighting roles of the companies ended with the British Colonial takeover in the late 19th century, they still performed important roles in the ritual life of the Fante peoples. Each company has a central elaborate shrine (Posuban), which stores the regalia and is a focal point for scarifies and the flags (Frankaa) are an important object of Asafo regalia. The imagery highlights the power and wealth of the company and the design often alludes to proverbs from Akan culture.
