Antonietta Brandeis, Czech 1848-1926- St Mark's, Venice from the Grand Canal; oil on board
#RoseberysDiscoveries
Roseberys first Old Master, 18th & 19th Pictures auction of the year, proved that demand was high for works that are new to the market and of high quality. The strong and varied tri-annual sale, that compromised of 249 lots in total on Tuesday 23rd March 2021, in the midst of lockdown, boasted numerous noteworthy results, with work by Jacob Frans van der Merck and Antonietta Brandeis, leading the sale. Joining the portraits by Jacob Frans van der Merck as the joint highest value lots in the sale was an exquisite scene of St Mark's, Venice from the Grand Canal, by Czech artist Antonietta Brandeis, 1848-1926, discovered during an inheritance tax valuation for probate. The oil on board far exceeded its top estimate of £3,000 to make £11,875. The artwork that measured 17.8x24.5cm came with a provenance from the Rayner MacConnal, London, according to the label attached to the reverse. Brandeis, was most well-known for her Italian landscapes such as the lot sold at Roseberys, as well as a painter of religious subjects for altarpieces. It is in Venice at the Academy that Brandeis perfected her skills as a meticulous landscape and cityscape painter, with intricate and luminous details in the tradition of the eighteenth-century “vedutisti”.
Maria Zuccon, Professional Services and Valuations Manager, commented on the discovery: ‘Everybody knows that Venice adds a surplus value to anything! Anything that depicts Venice, sells, without any ‘if’ or ‘but’. This painting belonged to a very large and elegant collection. A collection that mirrored the style of another time. Despite the highly conservative taste, due to the deceased social class, among the pieces, there were some very interesting hidden gems like the painting by Antonietta Brandeis, possibly the only female post-vedutisti artist. This painting was sold for close to four times its estimated high value, which was a great surprise on the auction day. It’s curious to read this painting inside its large collection. The taste was dictated by the socially approved etiquette, but the Brandeis’s painting represents the support to all the female artists forgotten in the art history.’
