This September 4th, within the Prints & Multiples sale, Roseberys is proud to offer the remarkable private collection of Sue Clive MBE, on behalf of her family. Sue was a keen and knowledgeable private collector of prints from the 1970’s to the early 2020’s, and a pioneer in the emerging practice of gallery education in this country from the late 1970's onwards. As a founding member of the National Association for Gallery Education (Engage), Sue got to know many of the printmakers and artists, with some prints dedicated to her in this collection.

Lots 9 and 10: Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson ARA, British 1889-1946, Dawn at Southwark, 1917 and Paul Nash, British 1889-1946, The Tide, 1920

A great example from this collection is an etching entitled ‘Chelsea Reach’, c.1919, by C.R.W. Nevinson ARA (Lot 7), estimated at £18,000-20,000. Other highlights are two works by Paul Nash (Lot 10 and Lot 11), a beautiful aquatint on wove by Dame Paula Rego DBE RA (Lot 27) and a lithograph by William Scott CBE RA (Lot 22).

LOT 471: Yayoi Kusama, Japanese b. 1929- Yellow Pumpkin, 1982

An exceptional lithograph and screenprint by Yayoi Kusama entitled ‘Yellow Pumpkin, 1982’ (Lot 471) will be available in the upcoming Prints & Multiples sale with an estimate of £40,000-50,000. From an edition of only 70, this print is particularly special as it’s not been seen coming up for auction in the European market very often.

Lot 106: Salvador Dalí, Spanish 1904-1989, The Peace Menorah, c.1981


This sale will also feature a wonderful selection of distinguished artists, such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Damien Hirst, Richard Hambleton, Andy Warhol, Bob Dylan, Yayoi Kusama, Harland Miller, and Banksy. Lot 261: Harland Miller, British b.1964- Don't Let the Bastards Cheer You Up, 2016

Another remarkable work is ‘Don't Let the Bastards Cheer You Up, 2016’ (Lot 261) by Harland Miller, which is coming to auction on the 4th of September with an estimate of £50,000-70,000. This striking print is hand finished in colour with acrylic glitter and graphite, and a unique Artist’s Proof, with working comments and calculations left by the artist. 

Lot 289: Andy Warhol, American 1928-1987, Mildred Scheel, 1980

From the American section, notable works by Andy Warhol include a unique silkscreen entitled ‘Double Self Portrait, circa 1977’ (Lot 287); the ‘Tattooed Woman Holding a Rose, circa 1955’ (Lot 286), and a screenprint with diamond dust entitled ‘Mildred Scheel, 1980 (Lot 289).


 

Lot 308: Bob Dylan, American b.1941- Sidetracks, 9 February 1991, London, England

Still within the American section, Bob Dylan stands out with a unique hand embellished giclée, ‘Sidetracks, 9 February 1991, London, England’ (Lot 308). Based on Dylan's most famous image, ‘Train Tracks’, each work from the series carries an individual date, city and country, based on concerts performed by Dylan from 1961-2013. On the 9th of February 1991, Dylan performed at the Hammersmith Odeon. 

Lot 92: Pablo Picasso, Spanish 1881-1973, Tête de femme de profil, 1959

Pablo Picasso’s ‘Tête de femme de profil, 1959’ (Lot 92), estimated at £20,000-30,000, is another highlight. This impressive linocut on wove paper is signed and only from an edition of 50, depicting a striking profile of a woman.

 

Lot 484: Banksy, British b.1974-Tesco Tomato Soup Can (Purple/Orange/Blue), 2005

Other noteworthy works include Banksy’s ‘Tesco Tomato Soup Can (Purple/Orange/Blue), 2005’ (Lot 484), a signed screenprint in colours, from the edition of 10, estimated at £50,000-70,000. Other Banksy highlights are a screenprint published by Pictures on Walls, London, titled ‘Morons, 2007’ (Lot 486), and an example of the ‘Riot Van, 2015’ (Lot 498), which was gifted to Dismaland employees by the artist.

 

Lot 100: Joan Miró, Spanish 1893-1983, Le Passage de l'oseau divin; Vers l'Arc en ciel; Femmes encercle par le vol de l'oiseau; L'echelle de l'evasion, from the Constellations series, 1941

Final highlights include David Yarrow’s ‘Kingdom, 2019’ (Lot 406), estimated at £12,000-15,000; Damien Hirst’s ‘Lysergic acid Diethylamide (LSD), 2000’ (Lot 413) (estimate: £10,000-15,000); a set of Joan Miró’s lithographs (Lot 100), valued at £8,000-12,000; and Shepard Faire’s screenprint and mixed media work ‘Duality of Humanity, 2008’ (Lot 478), estimated at £8,000-12,000.
