Description

Ratna Raghia Dhulsada, Warli Tribe, late 20th century- Two Warli paintings, mounted, glazed and framed, 40x30cm. and 40x17cm, (2)

Balu Dhumada, Anil Wangad, Krisna Pisari, Ratna Dhulsada, Sampat Dhumada, Chaitya Lakhama Wangad and Kishna Jethya Pasari are few names that have played a prominent role in popularizing Warli art form. An exhibition of these artists was held at a prominent gallery in Pune city, on Patrakar Nagar road from May 19 to 25. Based in the Thane District, about 150 km north of Bombay, the Warli tribe numbers over 300,000 members.

Warli art depicts multitudes of tiny human forms hunting, dancing or cultivating the land against a backdrop of tribal huts are done on mustard yellow, black and white backgrounds. The sheer joy of life comes through in paintings that depict the typically line-drawn stylized figures as they sing, dance, draw water or till their fields in stunning circular formations or in beautifully harmonized compositions and silhouettes.

Collections are in the Museum Kunst Palast Dusseldorf, Germany and the Mithila Museum, Japan.
