Lot 245

Description

Richard Long CBE,

British b. 1945-

River Avon Mud Fingerprints;

painted wood and mud, affixed to painted fibreboard, 78x5cm, (overall 110.5x60.5cm), (unframed), (ARR)

Provenance: Donated by the artist to the Temwa charity where it was exhibited in a charity art auction at the House of Commons, 13.12.14. Published in the exhibition catalogue.

Note: This lot is being sold on behalf of Temwa; a certificate of authenticity from the artist accompanies this lot. Temwa works with isolated communities in northern Malawi, one of the poorest places on earth, to develop self-sufficient, sustainable futures. For more information see www.temwa.org

For Long, mud is a simple, direct natural material. This compliments his use of his own body, rather than tools, to create the artwork: All my work is simple. I like the primal energy of just handprints or fingerprints. Its like cave painting.
