Description

Ruskin Spear CBE RA,

British 1911-1990-

Homage to the Unknown Political Prisoner, c.1955-56;

oil on canvas, bears inscription on the stretcher, 185x140cm, (unframed) (ARR)

Note: Spear was so angered by fellow artist Reg Butler winning an international competition for a monument to 'The Unknown Political Prisoner' (he considered Butler's entry a 'celebration of modernism') that he created this painting in response. The central form mimics Butler's design, but Spear has shrouded it in a black background and added in darkly threatening faces that leer at the sculpture.

We are grateful to Roger Spear for his assistance with the cataloguing of this work.
