Lot 382

Description

An impressive scratch built miniature mechanical scale model of a travelling three-ring circus, 'Silver's Model Circus', built by David Hardie and family, (1950s-1990s), total dimensions (including viewing rail and roof) 27 x 10 x 7 feet

Note: The circus is constructed around a central canvas tent, which was made by David Hardie in the 1930s, and was the original model used by salesmen to show circus owners a scale model of the tent they could buy. The circus is based on a real travelling Australian circus set up by David Hardie, his brother Les, and their partner Mervyn King after WWII and all of the automated acts seen in this present model are based on real acts. It features over one hundred hand crafted and painted moving figures and animals. The circus consists of a three-ring big top, and a menagerie tent, each housing various automated acts, surrounded by a track on which two horse drawn carriages and an advertising truck drive around. There is a stable block, canteen, and living quarters, and a number of caravans. The whole circus is encased in a large display cabinet.
