Lot 162

Description

Persici vel sopho rum regni typus, Gerard Mercator and Jodocus Hondius, Amsterdam 1623, mounted, glazed and framed, 35.1 x 50.4cm.

The focus of this map is the old Kingdom of Persia though the map clearly shows present-day Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan. Of note are the cities: Bagadet (Baghdad), Chabul or Cabul (Kabul) south, and not north, of Candahar (Kandahar) as well as other numerous towns and cities.

The map provides an interesting view into Western perceptions of the geography of the interior in the early 1600s.

From the "Gerardi Mercatoris Atlas sive Cosmographicae" (Mercator-Hondius Atlas).
