Dr WB Manley served in the Indian Police in the Bombay Presidency in the period 1905-1924. As an officer in the Bengal Lancers from 1917-1919, he saw active service on the North West Frontier as ADC to the GOC Aden Field Force. On his return from India he studied law and practised from 1925-1946 at the London Bar. In 1952, at the age of 67, he qualified in medicine at St Thomas's Hospital.
Dr Manley was a great collector of Indian paintings and exhibited works from it on a number of occasions, in particular in the Royal Academy Exhibition in 1947-48 of the Art of India and Pakistan. The main sale of his collection took place at Sotheby's on the 14th July, 1971. He was retired at the time and died on Oct 6, 1972, leaving a residue of his collection to be sold privately in later years. In July, 1973, the British Museum bought from his executors the album containing his famous Ragamala series (c.1610 AD).
