Description
Augustus Osborne Lamplough, ARA RWS,
British 1877-1930-
Riders on camels in full charge in the desert;
watercolour on paper, signed and dated 'A. Lamplough 1911' (lower left), 48.4 x 73.7 cm.
Provenance:
with Grundy & Smith., Manchester.
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Lamplough was an English Orientalist painter and illustrator, who was particularly celebrated for his scenes of North Africa. He travelled in Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, and other parts of North Africa. Most of his early works are interiors and scenes of Venice until 1905, after which he devoted himself exclusively to Orientalist scenes in subdued tones. It is said that he painted everything as it would be seen within an hour of sunset. The present work is characteristic of the artist's oeuvre, with his preference for watercolour enabling him to effectively blur the distinction between sand and sky, imbuing the work with an alluring dreamy quality.
