Description
Vik Muniz,
Brazilian/ American b.1961-
The Tree (Pictures of Junk), 2009;
digital C-print on wove, signed and dated in black ink and numbered 4/6 to label on the reverse, sheet 127 x 100cm
Note: This is a work by the Brazilian artist and photographer Vik Muniz. This work is typical of Munizs output, using assorted items such as magazine cuttings, chocolate syrup, and, in this instance, rubbish, to produce an artwork. By using these materials, Muniz expresses his rejection of the elitism of fine art, instead democratising the production of art.
Muniz and his work on one of the largest rubbish dumps in the world, Jardim Gramicho on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, was the subject of a 2010 documentary film called The Waste Land, which was nominated for an Oscar in that year. This piece, in its use of images of trash, therefore illustrates Munizs central preoccupation with exploring themes of social injustice through the medium of this material.
Munizs work has been influenced by artists such as Man Ray and Max Ernst. His work has been exhibited at MoMA, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Tate Modern in London, and the Centre National de la Photographie in Paris.
