The beggar girl;
oil on canvas, 38.3 x 30.7cm.

Note: Born to a dealer in local curiosities in Bath, Walker initially started off as a model to Lord Frederick Leighton, sitting for the artist on a number of occasions between 1858 and 1859. Leighton later encouraged Hanson to follow a career as an artist and he was accepted into the Royal Academy Schools, exhibiting there from 1872 to 1918. The present portrait depicts a young child, a theme often explored by Walker. He would go on to become a fashionable society portraitist of the period, receiving notable commissions from royalty as well as from fellow artists.
