Lot 242

Description

Henry Krokatsis,

British b.1965 -

Incorruptible St. Bernadette, 2008;

smoke deposit from used candles on paper, signed, titled and dated 2008 on the reverse of the frame, 29.8 x 38 cm (ARR)

Provenance: Private Collection, London

Note: Henry Krokatsis is a contemporary British artist who produces art using a range of materials, most commonly returning to the medium of smoke residue on paper, from which the present piece is constructed.

Krokatsis regularly utilises the stubs of used votive candles to construct his artwork, allowing him to explore the extent to which objects can be invested with and in the instance of the remains of these candles, which are then discarded stripped of spiritual significance. As the present piece bears witness, Krokatsiss technique also imbues his work with a haunting and ethereal quality which reinforces his subject matter.

Krokatsiss work has been exhibited at the Guggenheim Collection in Venice, the City Gallery in Prague, and the Danish Museum in Ordrupgaard, amongst many other locations.
