Description
Order of the Pleiades 3rd Class, Iran, silver and enamel medal, of disc form in blue and white enamel, topped with the stylized imperial Pahlavi Crown in red to which a simple ring is attached, 20 grams in original fitted red case with gold applied insignia
The Order of the Pleiades was established in 1955 or 1957 by the Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, as a female only dynastical order. The Order converted the Order of Aftab as a female imperial award and is given to outstanding women in 3 Classes in honor of their meritorious service. The Order also has three associated Medals to honor female members of the Imperial household for long and faithful service.
It is believed that the Order honours Soraya Esfandiary-Bakhtiari, the second wife of the former Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. The name of the order refers to the Pleiades, a star cluster located in the constellation Taurus in the northern hemisphere. Soraya is a female Persian name with a reference to the Pleiades.
This particular medal was given by Empress Farah Pahlavi to a very important female arts performer at the grand opening of the Roudaki Opera House in Tehran, built in 1967.
The order was abolished by the Islamic Republic of Iran after the fall of the last Shah. Since then, the order merely continues as a Royal Family Order, and Empress Farah Pahlavi, the third wife and widow of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, is still the grandmaster of this order.
