Lot 217

Description

Bishan Singh (1836-1900) attributed, Holy Man, North India,1870-80, opaque pigments heightened with gold on paper, depicted standing in a sparse landscape with attention to details of the figures costume and turban elements, painting 22 x 15.5cm.; folio 29 x 21.1cm.

Provenance: Professor Priscilla Schwartzchild Collection, Stamford, Connecticut, USA, 2 February 2007

Bishan Singh was known to have painted tradespeople and the activities of their daily lives. Influenced by Company School painting and a move toward the European taste for recording and documenting life through "realist" painting, Bishan Singh and his family of artists responded with enthusiasm to the demands of their patrons. (S. Stronge, ed., The Arts of the Sikh Kingdoms, p. 111-112). A painting by Bishan Singh of a Kashmir shawl weaving workshop can be found in the Musée Guimet, Paris (acc. no.MA 12702) and another of women in a cart in the Toor Collection, London. A self-portrait of Bishan Singh was sold at Bonhams London, 25 October 2007, lot 483.

The washy pale blue of the sky, the sketched landscape with attention paid to the details of the botany of the plants and the very fine features of the face are all indicative of Bishan Singh's hand.

See the previous Lot 216 for additional notes on this artist.
