Description
An equestrian portrait of Shri Hogha, Raghogarh, North India, circa 1700, gouache on paper heightened with gold, with identifying inscription in devanagari to reverse, shown seated and holding a delicate blossom, his resplendent white horse rearing up displaying dyed feet and tail, red and white blossoming flowers beneath him, 28cm. x 19cm.
Provenance: John Kasmin since 1970's
Although its monochromatic light green background is a feature of the Deccani style, the painting shows the influence of the Rajput Bundi and Kotah schools. This particular equestrian portrait is one of few surviving from Raghugarh in Central India. It compares closely with one in the Howard Hodgkin collection published in G. Filippi, Indian Miniatures and Paintings from the 16th to the 19th Century in the Collection of Howard Hodgkin, 1997, p. 81, no. 34.
