Lot 158

Description

Peter King,
British 1928-1957 -

Untitled (Mother and Child), c.1952;

lead, H20 x W9.2 x D9.7 cm (including base) (ARR)

Provenance:
private collection and thence by descent

Note:
this early work was made by the artist when he was working for Henry Moore and living at the Abbey Art Centre in New Barnet. The original owners of the work were also living with King at the Abbey Art Centre at the time.

Abbey Arts Centre was established in 1946 by William Ohly, an art dealer who ran the Berkeley Galleries in Davies Street, London, and was a focus point for many Australian expatriate artists from 1947-1951 and figures including Alan Davie, F. N. Souza and Lucien Freud. Much of Ohly's collection of ethnographic art was on display near King's studio.

King began working for Henry Moore in 1952, working on one of the components for his major Time-Life Commission. King would exhibit with Gallery One in the 1950s and at the important exhibition 'New Sculptors, Painter-Sculptors' at the ICA, London.
