Lot 191

Description

Francesco Peluso,
Italian 1836-1916-

A merry gathering;

oil on canvas, signed 'Peluso' (lower right), 40 x 60 cm.

Provenance:
Anon. sale, Sotheby's, New York, 9 June 1987, lot 516.
with G.M. Lotinga Fine Art Galleries, London.
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The present work depicts a group of figures in historical dress making and listening to music. As is the case here, the artist often placed his subjects in a setting of romanticised ruins, recalling the rustic outdoor settings of the 'fêtes galante' scenes of French rococo artists including Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) and Francois Boucher (1703-1770).

VAT
VAT is not charged on the hammer price unless it is stated that there is 'VAT applicable on the hammer price at the end of the description. Buyer's premium is subject to VAT.
