Description
After John Frederick Lewis, RA,
British 1804-1876-
Edfu, Upper Egypt;
oil on canvas, 30.5 x 79 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present work is a late 19th-century copy after the original 1860 painting by Lewis, of similar dimensions, and held in the Tate Collection [N01405]. Lewis painted the original on his return to London, based on the numerous drawings he had made whilst living in Cairo in the 1840s. The ancient ruins at Edfu are situated between Luxor and Aswan, in Egypt. It was unusual for Lewis to focus on the topography of Egypt, although the architecture remains subservient to the Bedouin encampment in the foreground. The vibrant colouring of Lewis's works is particularly faithful in this fine copy.
