Lot 95

Description

The Reverend William Gilpin,
British 1724-1804-

Five landscape views with lakes and mountains;

the first pencil and watercolour heightened with gum arabic on paper, signed with initials and dated '1781. Mar. 24. WG' on the reverse, 13.8 x 21.5 cm., the second, third, fourth and fifth pencil, pen and black ink, and wash on paper, variously inscribed and dated on the reverses, 20.2 x 30 cm. and smaller, five (5), (unframed).

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Unlike his brother Sawrey Gilpin (1733-1807), the Reverend William Gilpin did not work as a professional artist. He was a proponent of the 'picturesque' landscape, writing passionately about the principles of landscape painting, and producing travel literature in his attempt to discover the best vistas.
