Lot 35

Description

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn,
Dutch 1606-1669-

The Baptism of the Eunuch;

etching with drypoint, 1641, on laid paper, without watermark, a slightly later impression of New Hollstein's third state (of four), 17.7 x 21.3 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Literature:
Bartsch, Hollstein 98; Hind 182
New Hollstein 186.

Note:
A scene in the Acts of the Apostles, where a high-ranking official of the Queen of Ethiopia is baptised by St Philip, whilst a figure on horseback watches on from the left. Rembrandt had produced a painting of the subject in 1626, perhaps influenced by his teacher Pieter Lastman (1583-1633), who also treated the subject in the early 1620s.
