Lot 92

Description

Attributed to John Linnell,
British 1792-1882-

Harvesting in a stormy landscape;

oil on canvas, 71.5 x 99 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The present lot is probably the work listed in D. Linnell, 'The Life of John Linnell', 1994, p.371, no.337 (b): "The Coming Storm - Replica with variations 'Storm' 28 x 39 in. Sold to Fox White", painted in 1873. It is possibly related, too, to Linnell's 'Storm in Harvest', also dated 1873 and with 'Fox White', which sold at Christie's, London, 7 June 2007, lot 102 (£57,600).

Linnell is one of the central figures of English romanticism. He was a close friend of William Blake (1757-1827), and was father-in-law to Samuel Palmer (1805-1881). With them he shared an appreciation of the divine presence in nature, the earth's fecundity, and man's powerlessness when confronted with natural forces. He acquired a small estate in Surrey in the 1850s, and many of his landscapes celebrate the Surrey Weald.
