Lot 284

Description

A Ottoman copy of the Divan e Hamse of the poet Nevizade Atai (1583-1635), Ottoman Turkey, 18th century, 237ff., Ottoman Turkish manuscript on paper, with 23ll. of black nasta'liq to the page arranged in two vertical columns outlined in gold rule, headers in red, five illuminated and polychrome decorated headers,  the Hamse including his Heft Han, seven tales, the last of which tells of the adventures of two young men in Istanbul, of their eventual capture and enslavement by Europeans during a pilgrimage by sea to Egypt, and of the two European men who in turn fall in love with them, in dark red gilt decorated Ottoman leather binding (missing flap), folio 21.5 x 12.2cm.

Provenance: Private French Collection

The British Library (Or. 13882) has an 18th-century Ottoman recension of the Hamse-yi ‘Atā’ī, ‘Atā’ī’s four extant mesnevis. Wine and music in the Imperial court; moral and ethical issues; and social mores and values such as heroism are treated in the first three mesnevis, the ‘Alemnüma, the Nefhatül’Ezhar and the Sohbet-ül-Ebkar. The final one however, the Heft Han, contains seven accounts, the final one of which relates the story of two male lovers, telling of the two young men’s “frolics” in Istanbul, of their eventual capture and enslavement by Europeans during a pilgrimage by sea to Egypt, and of the two European men who in turn fall in love with them. Boone interprets the Heft Han as, partly, an allegorical tale about morality and policing of sexuality in the Ottoman Empire (Joseph Allen Boone. The Homoerotics of Orientalism, New York: Columbia University Press, 2014, pp. 10-16).
