Description
A St. Petersburg (Alexander I) Imperial Porcelain Factory topographical plate from the Dowry service of Grand Duchess Ekaterina Pavlovna, 1801-1802, blue crowned A mark, the central medallion with a view of Assisi in Umbria, named Assise in black script on the reverse, the border with gilt husks, broad gilt bands and floral festoons divided by three angular yellow panels centred by simulated cameos with buildings, 23.8cm diameter
Lot Footnotes
Note: The present plate is from the Dowry Service which was made for Grand Duchess Ekaterina (Catherine) Pavlovna (1788-1818) between 1799 and 1802. Catherine was the fourth daughter of Tsar Paul I, who ordered dowry services for his daughters long before they married. The first Dowry Service to be completed was the service for her sister, Grand Duchess Alexandra Pavlovna (1783-1801), which was completed in 1796. Tsar Paul died during production of Grand Duchess Catherine’s service, so pieces in her service bear marks from the reigns of Paul I and his successor Alexander I.
Grand Duchess Catherine married her first cousin George Duke of Oldenburg in 1809, but after only three years he died of typhoid fever. In 1815 she travelled to England with her brother Tsar Alexander I where she met her second husband Crown Prince Wilhelm of Württemberg (who divorced his wife Princess Caroline Augusta to marry her). They married in 1816, and the service is also sometimes called the Württemberg Service.
For further discission of this service, see N.B. von Wolf (Ed. V. Znamenov), Imperatorskii farforovyi zavod, 1744-1904, St. Petersburg, 2008, pp. 162-166.
