Description
Theodore Major,
British 1908-1999 -
Early Morning at Wigan;
oil on board, 32.2 x 38 cm (ARR)
Provenance:
Christie's, London, 20th Century British Art, 27th June 2007, lot 51;
with Clark Art Ltd., Hale (according to the label attached to the reverse);
private collection, purchased from the above
Note:
this evocative and moving work is highly indicative of the monochrome paintings Major made of his hometown of Wigan, that was the major focus of his mature work. Similar scenes can be found in the collections of The Whitworth, Manchester, Buxton Museum & Art Gallery and Salford Museum & Art Gallery.
Influential writer John Berger would state in 1958 that Major’s works 'deserve to hang among the best English paintings of our time', alongside those of Stanley Spencer and Josef Herman. Major was part of an important tradition of 20th century British figurative painting, that also includes Joan Eardley and L.S. Lowry, each artist looking at British society through their particular and idiosyncratic vision.
