Lot 141

Description

Carel Weight RA,
British 1908-1997 -

A Scene from an Unwritten Opera, 1989;

oil on board, signed upper left 'Carel Weight', 122 x 152 cm (ARR)

Exhibited:
Royal Academy, London, 'Summer Exhibition', 1989 (according to the two labels affixed to the frame)

Note:
Weight said the following relating to this painting in his comment for the Royal Academy catalogue in 1989,

'I am always impressed by the emphasis which theatres place on the relationship between the actors and the stage set and I often think of the settings of my paintings as a theatrical scenery. I came across this setting in the neglected corner of an old estate. The weather, while I was there was very stormy which made a great mound of sawdust I found look intensely dramatic. I wanted to introduce people into this scene to make a picture which reflected the drama and tension in the air. I have used deep colours and a particular perspective to heighten the tension. The painting presents an enigma which calls upon the viewer to make his own interpretation.'
