Lot 254

Description

Théophile Alexandre Steinlen,
Swiss / French 1859-1923-

Studies of women making baskets[?] and cats;

pencil and coloured chalks on paper, signed, inscribed and dated 'Steinlen / St Lazare - 95' (lower right), 32.5 x 51.3 cm.

Provenance:
with Roland, Browse and Delbanco, London.
with the German-born British art historian Alfred Scharf (1900-1965);
and thence by descent.

Note:
Steinlen was a significant painter and printmaker in the development of the Art Nouveau movement. He is perhaps best known for his poster designs, especially the one produced for the cabaret of Le Chat Noir in Montmartre. His love of cats, which feature in many of his works, is demonstrated here, where sketches of cats sit above the principal composition of women engaged in their work - possibly - of basket making.
