Description
John Wilson Ewbank, RSA,
British 1779-1847-
Two River Scenes: Figures making camp by a ruin on a riverbank; and a River landscape with a boat and figure, mountains beyond;
each watercolour and bodycolour on card, both indistinctly inscribed on the reverse, each 15.7 x 22.5 cm., two (2).
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present works are particularly charming examples of the landscapes which defined the artist's output. Ewbank worked in part as an illustrator, with 51 of his drawings of Edinburgh engraved for James Brown's 'Picturesque Views of Edinburgh' (1825), and others produced for editions of Walter Scott's 'Waverley' novels, and Gilbert White's 'Natural History of Selbourne'. Although Ewbank typically painted the rural scenery in England and Scotland, the present works are imbued with a slightly fantastical air, perhaps evoking Classical Italianate landscapes, with the vast horizons populated by romantic ruins.
