Description
Henri-Joseph Harpignies,
French 1819-1916-
Le Pecheur;
oil on panel, signed 'h. harpignies' (lower left), 26.5 x 34.8 cm.
Provenance:
with Thomas Agnew & Sons, London, no.25450.
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Together with his close friend Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796-1875), Harpignies was a prominent painter of the Barbizon School. The present work illustrates the artist's painterly skill, particularly apparent in his masterful ability to depict the water towards the foreground with just a handful of brushstrokes. Furthermore, the loose handling of the paint imparts a sense of freshness and immediacy to the scene, effectively evoking the brisk winds which rustles the foliage, and gesturing towards the 'plein air' technique which the Barbizon painters favoured.
