Lot 179

Description

After James Gillray,
British 1756-1815-

The Cow-Pock-or-the Wonderful Effects of the New Inoculation!;

pen, ink, and watercolour on paper, bears signature 'J. Gillray' (lower left), 26 x 36.4 cm.

Provenance:
Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 22 January 1981, lot 79.
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The present work is a copy in watercolour after Gillray's 1802 print entitled 'The Cow-Pock-or-the Wonderful Effects of the New Inoculation!' [British Museum no.1851,0901.1091]. This is certainly in reference to Edward Jenner's (1749-1823) discovery of inoculation in 1796 as a means of preventing serious cases of cox pox and, in turn, smallpox. A figure, identified as Jenner, performs the inoculation by making a gash with a knife on the arm of a clearly concerned lady, seated in the centre of the scene, whilst a young boy holds a bucket which reads 'Vaccine Pock hot from ye Cow'. Miniature cows sprout from the figures to the right of the seated female figure, and on the chest to the left of the scene are bottles, a syringe, and a tub of 'Opening Mixture', which appears to be being administered to patients.
