Description
Circle of Domenico Riccio, called Brusasorci,
Italian c.1516-1567-
Study of a female figure in Classical dress, possibly Diana, with her arm raised;
black chalk, pen and red ink heightened with white on laid paper, with watermark, 30.2 x 18.5 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Brusasorci was a Mannerist artist from Verona, who is believed to have studied under Giovanni Francesco Caroto (c.1480-c.1555) and Niccolò Giolfino (1476-1555). He is particularly celebrated for his frescos, including those which he produced for the Municipio in Trento, the San Pietro Martire and the Palazzo Vescovile, both in Verona. He often depicted dramatic Classical subjects, such as the fresco of Phaeton which he painted on the ceiling of the Palazzo Chiericati, a work for which he is particularly lauded.
