Lot 78

Description

Ernest H. Shepard MC OBE,
British 1879-1976 -

Pooh and Piglet delivering parcels, 1931;

ink on paper, signed and dated lower right 'Ernest H. Sheperd Oct 1st 1931', 9.8 x 13.6 cm (ARR)

Provenance:
private collection;
Sotheby’s, London, 'Children's Books, Drawings and Juvenilia', 16th March 1970, lot 373 (according to a copy of the original invoice);
Elaine Moss (1924-2020), purchased from the above and thence by descent

Note:
Elaine Moss was a vital and highly important figure in children's books, working variously as an advisor, reviewer, editor and writer, producing works including 'Wait and See Book' in 1963, 'Twirly' in 1964 and 'Polar' in 1975. From the 1970s, she was the selector for the National Book League’s Children’s Books of the Year awards and she later won the Eleanor Farjeon Award for her outstanding contribution to the world of children’s books in 1976.

Shepard's illustrations have become artworks in their own right. The present lot depicts the iconic friendship of Pooh and Piglet, walking together as they so often do throughout Milne's books, perhaps in the winter time. Milne fondly inscribed a copy of Winnie-the-Pooh with the following verse:

When I am gone,
Let Shepard decorate my tomb,
And put (if there is room)
Two pictures on the stone:
Piglet from page a hundred and eleven,
And Pooh and Piglet walking (157)…
And Peter, thinking that they are my own,
Will welcome me to Heaven.
