Description
Child & Child. An Edwardian silver gilt and enamel butterfly brooch, the wings and body of tones of blue and green guilloché enamel, with gold brooch pin, maker's mark of a sunflower between two C's to reverse of one wing, circa 1905, width 2.8cm, with maker's original fitted case stamped Child & Child
Child & Child were two brothers, Walter and younger brother Harold who having benefited from a substantial inheritance opened a business in 1880 at 1 Seville Street, Knightsbridge, London. In 1891 the firm moved to South Kensington and it was there that they started to produce jewellery that would establish their name. They designed pieces that incorporated enamel of typical blueish green hues and subjects such as butterflies, wings, hearts and buckles. Their unique trademark was a stamped sunflower between two Cs. The firm’s patrons included Queen Victoria, Edward VII, Queen Alexandra, Sir Edwin Lutyens and the Pre-Raphaelite artists Sir Edward Burne-Jones and William Holman Hunt. In 1889 the partnership was dissolved leaving Harold to run the company on his own. Harold continued trading until his death in 1915.
