Lot 307

Description

An Italian tabernacle with Christ at the Column, from the workshop of Guglielmo Della Porta, 1500-1577, Rome, c.1570, the silver figure of Jesus Christ stood with hands bound behind his back in front of the silver-gilt Corinthian column, within ebony tabernacle with gilt-bronze and silver appliques of a dove and winged cherub masks, 32cm high, 19.3cm wide, 7cm deep

Provenance: Christie's, London, 4 December 2019, lot 181, £5,250, Property from the Michael Hall Collections.

Exhibited: New York, Mobile, Evansville and Sacramento, American Bible Society, Mobile Museum of Art, Evansville Museum of Arts and Sciences and Crocker Museum of Art, Icons or Portraits? Images of Jesus and Mary from the Collection of Michael Hall, July 2002 - Jan. 2004, cat. no. 45.

Note: As noted in 'Guglielmo della Porta: A Counter-Reformation Sculptor' by R. Coppel et al., Coll & Cortes, Madrid, 2012, pp. 74-97' the present lot is closely comparable to a relief depicting the Flagellation of Christ attributed by Rosario Coppel to Roman silversmith and sculptor sculptor Guglielmo della Porta. In both the relief and this present tabernacle the figure of Christ is almost identical, and Coppel bases this attribution on convincing comparisons with both drawings by della Porta and a series of other figures of Christ at the Column and Flagellation groups historically attributed to him.
