Description
Périclès Pantazis,
Greek 1849-1884-
A wooded landscape with cows at pasture;
oil on canvas, signed 'Pantazis' (lower left), 36.5 x 53.3 cm.
Provenance:
Purchased directly from the artist's family in Athens in 2000 by the present owner.
Note:
Pantazis was academically trained at the Athens School of Arts from 1866-1871 and subsequently at the Munich Academy, before moving to Paris in 1872. In Paris he came into contact with the work of Gustave Courbet (1819-1877), which was to have a long-lasting influence on him. Here, very much inspired by the Barbizon school, Pantazis has built up a composition with sensitivity to the natural world, particularly in the gentle treatment of the grazing cows and the overall suffusion of pale silvery light, which suggests sunshine after a storm. Indeed, reviewing Pantazis’s work in 1876, art critic Mark Very noted that 'Pantazis is a faithful and sincere lover of nature'.
