Lot 206

Description

Sir Wyke Bayliss, PRBA,
British 1835-1906-

Sketch of a church interior, Siena;

pencil and watercolour on paper, bears old label signed and inscribed 'Wyke Bayliss / Siena' attached to the backing paper, 13 x 9.3 cm.

Provenance:
The Property of the Late Reverend John Watson.

Note:
Bayliss studied at the Royal Academy and at the School of Design, where he befriended key members of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, including Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898), John Everett Millais (1829-1896), William Holman Hunt (1827-1910), and Frederic Leighton (1830-1896). Bayliss succeeded James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) as President of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1888, when Whistler and his followers split from the institution, a post which he held until his death in 1906.

Bayliss was fascinated with the beauty of ecclesiastical architecture, and indeed it is sketches and paintings of cathedrals and churches which make up almost the entirety of his output. This evocative and atmospheric study of the arches and decorations of a Sienese church interior is characteristic of his work.
