Lot 173

Description

Ernest Edward Briggs, RI RSW,
Scottish 1866-1913-

Low Tide: The West Coast of Scotland;

pencil and watercolour heightened with white and scratching out on paper, signed 'ERNEST BRIGGS' (lower left), 39.5 x 59.4 cm.

Provenance:
with Highgate Gallery, London.
The Property of the Late Reverend John Watson.

Note:
Briggs' skill as an artist and as a keen fisherman is most evident in his 1912 publication 'Angling and Art in Scotland', which he both wrote and illustrated. He produced a number of large watercolours depicting coastal and mountain scenes, of which the present work is a charming example, conveying the utter peace and tranquility of the Scottish coastline. Briggs studied at the Slade, going on to exhibit at the Fine Art Society, the Royal Institute, and the Royal Society of British Artists.
