Description
Circle of Sir Thomas Lawrence, PRA FRS,
British 1769-1830-
Portrait of a lady, bust-length, with dark, curly hair;
oil on canvas, oval, bears a 1922 exhibition label inscribed 'Hon. Mrs Wood / Melton Park / Portrait / Sir Thos. Lawrence...' attached to the central horizontal stretcher bar, 73 x 63 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present work, with its loose brushwork and unfinished appearance, shows similarities to a number of Sir Thomas Lawrence's portraits, including that of Elizabeth Thynne, Countess Cawdor, held in the National Galleries of Scotland [no.312096], and of the Countess of Darnley, in the Tate [no.N00324].
Here, the visible under-drawing is not dissimilar to the drawings Lawrence executed in preparation for his portraits, and it is possible that the present canvas was one of the many unfinished works that were left in Lawrence's studio after the artist's death in 1830, many of which were later reworked by other artists.
