Description
After Sir Anthony van Dyck,
Flemish 1599-1641-
Self-portrait;
black wash heightened with white on blue paper, 37.8 x 25 cm. (mounted / unframed).
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present work is a late 17th / early 18th-century drawing conceived after Van Dyck's original oil on canvas, which today hangs in London's National Portrait Gallery [no.NPG 6987]. The original portrait is one of three known self-portraits painted by van Dyck when he was in England, and it probably dates from the last years of his life, c.1640. It was thought to be originally in the collection of Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680) and was then bought by Lord Newport, 1st Earl of Bradford (1619-1708) in 1682.
