Note:
In this sublime, early box made by the artist in the 1960s, the luxurious - almost fetishistic - bejewelled exterior contrasts with its hidden interior, guarded by multiple doors, reflecting the contrast between the exterior and interior self that has preoccupied the artist throughout his career. The machine at its centre, is perhaps a brain, whirring on rotation, like the thought patterns of an individual mind. The box calls for you to play with it, to open its doors and peer in, constantly in flux and never fixed.
