Lot 7

Description

Wyndham Lewis,
British 1882-1957 -

The Cow Jumped Over the Moon, 1948;

pastel, gouache and pencil on paper, signed and dated lower centre 'Wyndham Lewis 1948', 38.3 x 35.7 cm (ARR)

Provenance:
New Grafton Gallery, London;
the Collection of Bernard Sheridan (1927-2007) and thence by descent

Exhibited:
The Tate Gallery, London, 'Wyndham Lewis', 1956, cat. no.111 (according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame)

Literature:
Walter Michel, 'Wyndham Lewis: Paintings and Drawings', Thames & Hudson, London, p.418 pl.166 illus. no.1088

Note:
in Walter Michel's book he suggests that the work was started in 1942, due to its similarities to 'Witches Surprised by Dawn, 1942'. In both this work and later works like 'What the Sea is Like at Night, 1949' we see a returned sense of energy to Lewis's work, more reminiscent of his earlier explorations in Futurism with his avant-garde Vorticist group. The basis of the work is the Nursey Rhyme 'Hey Diddle Diddle', the continued absurdist streak in Lewis's work and his brilliant ability to subvert English conventions.
