Description
Richard Eurich OBE RA,
British 1903-1992 -
Morning on the Solent, 1972;
oil on board, signed and dated lower left 'R.Eurich 72', also signed, titled and dated on the reverse 'Richard Eurich The Solent 1972', 34.5 x 60 cm (ARR)
Provenance:
with Arthur Tooth & Sons, Ltd., 'Richard Eurich: Recent Paintings', 9th-27th October 1973, cat.no.30 (according to the label attached to the reverse);
private collection, UK, purchased from the above
Note:
this is a brilliant example of the tranquil seascapes that Eurich painted across his career and most notably in the 1970s. Eurich had settled in the New Forest in the 1930s and would often depict his local Solent coast and many of these paintings are now in museums including 'Waterspout on the Solent, 1954' (Bradford Museums and Galleries), 'Solent Angler, 1975' (University of Chichester, Otter Gallery) and 'Breakwaters, 1988' (Hampshire Cultural Trust). Eurich would always include small signs of maritime activity seen here in the boats along horizon as well as the small plane in the sky. This tranquil scene is in contrast to the intensity of Eurich's maritime scenes from WWII such as ' "Fortresses" over Southampton Water, 1942' now in the Imperial War Museum collection.
Eurich exhibited a number of times with Arthur Tooth & Sons in London in the 1970s.
