Lot 211

Description

John Minton,
British 1917-1957 -

Still-life;

oil on board, signed top left 'Minton', 91.8 x 91.5 x cm (unframed) (ARR)

Provenance:
private collection and thence by descent

Note:
this early still life composition shows the young artist exploring the possibilities of paint and colour, clearly influenced by the pioneering Modernist work of Sir Matthew Smith and Duncan Grant. It is similar in handling to 'Still-life (with Portrait of a girl on the reverse)' which was sold at Roseberys on the 5th February 2022, lot 16 and was previously owned by Frances Spalding, who wrote an acclaimed biography on the artist in 1999.

John Minton was one of the most celebrated British artists of the post-war period, and became associated, along with his colleagues John Craxton, Graham Sutherland and Michael Ayrton, with the Neo-Romantic movement. He was also famously painted by Lucien Freud in 1952. He became widely known for his book illustrations, including for 'Time was Away: A Notebook in Corsica' and an edition of 'Treasure Island'. He was recently the subject of a major retrospective at Pallant House Gallery in 2017.
