Description
Manner of Philips Wouwerman,
19th century-
Two dogs provoking a white stallion in a landscape, a distant city view beyond;
oil on canvas, 51 x 65.8 cm.
Provenance:
Property from a European Private Collection.
Note:
The present work recalls the paintings of Wouwerman (1619-1668), one of the most prominent artists of the Dutch Golden Age. Much of Wouwerman's oeuvre consists of similar compositions, depicting a white horse on the crest of a hill in an expansive landscape, with fields stretching off into the horizon beyond. The pose of the stallion, turning back to face the two dogs, creates a sense of movement and theatricality which is further evoked by the swirling storm clouds which gather above the scene.
