Lot 120

Description

After Francisco de Goya y Lucientes,
Spanish 1746-1828-

La Tauromaquia;

twenty-two photogravures, variously numbered and lettered within the plate, each 32 x 46.8 cm., twenty-two (22), (unframed).

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The present lot contains twenty-two prints after Goya's 'Tauromaquia' (Bullfighting) series, originally printed in 1816 and consisting of thirty-three prints. The 'Tauromaquia' series, which Goya produced at the age of 69, during a break from his 'Disasters of War' series, illustrate his fascination with bullfighting, a theme to which the artist had returned over the course of his life. The compositions of these works exhibit a radical experimentation with perspective which places the viewer squarely in the action, emphasising the intense theatricality and violence of the bullfight.
These photogravures possibly originate from the 1965 Special Edition of the series published by Editorial Jano S.A (Barcelona) and Ediciones de Arte S.A (Madrid), a portfolio which contained thirty-three prints numbered from 1 to 33, and seven prints, which were not published in the original edition, lettered from A to G.
