Description
Follower of Hendrick Martensz. Sorgh,
Dutch c.1610-1670-
Two seated figures drinking in a tavern interior;
black and white chalk on paper laid down on a thicker sheet of laid paper with a watermark, 13 x 10.1 cm. (unframed).
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present drawing is heavily influenced by Sorgh's paintings, with his output consisting of similar scenes of figures drinking, gambling, and smoking pipes in dimly-lit tavern interiors. The present work appears to combine elements of various compositions by Sorgh, with the figure on the left, seated in a converted barrel and drinking from a lidded tankard, recalling the sitter in a painting by Sorgh which sold at Christie's, London, on 23 October 1992 (lot 104), and another at Dorotheum, Vienna, on 14 March 1991 (lot 132), whilst the right-hand figure is almost identical that depicted in a scene by Sorgh which sold at Christie's, Amsterdam, on 13 October 2009 (lot 7) for £18,750.
