Lot 432

Description

El Anatsui,
Ghanaian b.1944 -

Untitled, 1983;

incised wood panels, 5, each approx. 92 x 28 cm; 92 x 147 cm (overall)

Provenance:
Professor Uche Okeke (1933-2016), purchased directly from the artist and thence by descent;
private collection, Lagos, purchased from the above

Note:
This work was originally owned by Professor Uche Okeke (1933-2016), an artist who not only first invited El Anatsui to work in Nigerian, but also held an early exhibition of the artist’s works ‘Wooden Wall Plaques by El Anatsui’, at his Asele Nimo Galleries, Nsukka in 1976.

The present lot is a key example of the artist’s early style, which combined a visual language inspired by traditional folklore with a modern technique, and comes at an important moment for the artist when his work is on display at the Turbine Hall at the Tate Modern in London.
