Lot Footnotes
Note: Luigi Serafini (b.1949) is an Italian designer and artist who worked as an architect in Milan in the 1980s. His best known work is Codex Seraphinianus, written in an entirely constructed language and described by its editor as an encyclopedic work, with illustrations that "mirror a world and a body of knowledge simultaneously similar and dissimilar to our own, like voices with the same inflection." Codex Seraphinianus was known and appreciated by literary personalities such as Roland Barthes and Italo Calvino, and inspirational for the French choreographer Philippe Decouflé. The editor implores readers to experience the work "like a child who has not yet learned to read but revels in the dreams and fantasies suggested to him by the pictures", and even advises the reader to tear up his own letter to "avoid contaminating the silent wonders of the Orbis Pictus Seraphinianus with the alphabetic plague".
