Cupid & Psyche, 1939;
gouache on paper, signed and dated lower left 'Francis Rose 39' and titled lower right 'Cupid & Psyche' with further inscriptions on the reverse, 17.6 x 25.5 cm: with 2 other theatre and ballet designs by the same artist, of a similar size and medium 'La Peri: Monte Carlo ballets, 1948' and 'La Peri, 1946' (unframed) (3) (ARR)

with Gimpel Fils, London, GF17918 (according to the label attached to the plastic folder)
Note:
according to the inscription on the reverse the 1st work is a set design for Sadlers Wells Ballet with music by Lord Berners. This was choreographed by Frederick Ashton and first performed on the 27th April 1939.
Rose began his career as a set designer for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, sometimes collaborating with his friend Christopher Wood. He was a friend of Gertrude Stein, who owned many of his works and of whom he made a portrait.

Qualifying living artists and the descendants of artists deceased within the last 70 years are entitled to receive a re-sale royalty each time their work is bought through an auction house or art market professional.
It applies to lots with hammer value over £1,000 as follows:
0 to £50,000 - 4%
£50,000.01 to £200,000 - 3%
£200,000.01 to £350,000 - 1%
£350,000.01 to £500,000 - 0.5%
Exceeding £500,000 - 0.25%
ARR is capped at £12,500

Export of goods
Buyers intending to export goods should ascertain whether an export licence is required before bidding. Export licences are issued by Arts Council England and application forms can be obtained from its Export Licensing Unit.
