Composition VII, 1954;
oil on card, laid down on canvas, signed and dated lower right 'Winter 54', 74 x 100 cm (ARR)
Provenance:
with Curt Valentin Gallery, New York, no.18747 (according to the label attached to the reverse);
private collection, UK and thence by descent
Note:
Curt Valentin Gallery was in operation from 1937-1955.
Winter studied in Dessau under Bauhaus masters including Vasily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and Oskar Schlemmer for three years. he befriends Kirchner and Naum Gabo during this time.
This is a classic example of Winter's work, who formed a group in Munich founded on Zen Buddhism principles. The drawn lines into the paint echo this calligraphic style.
The 1950s were fruitful for Winter, with exhibitions at the São Paulo Biennial in 1955; Venice Biennale in 1956; and Documenta, Kassel in 1955 and 1959. He was included in Younger European Painters: A Selection (1953–54), at the Guggenheim Museum.
